Most likely your home was purchased with a mortgage loan, with terms and credit requirements much less stringent compared to Russia/UA lenders. Here in the US mortgage loan rates are hovering at 4% requiring as little as 3% of the homes value as down payment - almost anyone can "buy" a house. In any case, when the Soviet economic system collapsed in the 90's the state ownership of property transitioned into the individual head of households, and so more people in Russia/UA own their homes outright compared to NA.

I admire the efficient city planning structure of post-USSR cities and municipalities, and admit the American system of "suburban sprawl" has it's flaws. We are too dependent on automobiles for our personal transportation needs, and the high cost of transportation is a factor why many young adults are unable to afford the basic costs of living compared to previous generations.
