It is not expensive. I do not buy cheap food, but also try to be economical also. So it is about average overall for a food budget I would think.
Clothes here in the US are both cheaper and more expensive I think. There are many cheap clothes from China. There are also very many good middle quality clothes, which can then often be purchased on sale at reduced prices or through outlet malls. I think the very high end or designer clothes are similarly priced as in Europe.
Some specific examples, last summer i bought my girlfriend a couple pairs of good leather sandals for about $60 each. She found a down-filled jacket on sale for $85 and another leather jacket on sale for just under $100. Diesel jeans were $100 to $200 (she did not buy). Leather high heels, $85. The trick in the US is to shop around and watch the sales, because everything will go down in price at various times.
