I have tried to learn Russian. I know the alphabet, so can read. And I can communicate basic information. It was important to me to communicate with my ex-wife's mother and grandfather when we were married and to communicate with my ex-girlfriend's mother (and with my girlfriend too, as her English was very basic).
The translator helps, but not everyone speaks English well.
