My ex-wife spoke a tiny bit of English and my last girlfriend spoke almost none when we started to communicate. I can function if needed in Russian, but am not conversational and yet we communicated beautifully and deeply. If two people WANT to overcome a language barrier they can. It is like many things, if you "think you can", you're right. And if you "think you can't", you're right too.
