Paul ,
Well you have noticed how much reactions you got , to your simple question.
First thing to understand is , that these women are very proud.
They are PROUD PEOPLE !!!
So , again do some reading on their (daily) life. These people have very strong family ties (bonds).
We in the Western world have (maybe) already forgotten , what these words mean.So , knowing about their backgrounds , will give you a good basis , to start a meeting.
Understanding her questions , and from what perspective , she is asking them.
I can tell you this. Not understanding her culture and tradition , can or will create a situation , in which you do not understand , what she means and why she is saying that!
And it may result in a quarrel or a (bad) discussion , that did not had to happen.
Yes , it`s true , that the salaries are low , compared to Western standards. And there is also the un-balance , in wages between men and women , for the same function and work.
The prices in Ukraine have gone up , ever since the invasion in Crimea and the war in the East Ukraine. The economy is in bad shape.
The Hrivnia (in Ukriane) has declined in value. So dealing with the daily life - for food and other utilities , like electrity and gas ,
has become more of a problem.
Not to forget that the rent for housing has gone up too.
So , in the end , it`s a struggle for these people. And if you have never been there , you cannot place this in a right frame.
It is in these situations , that the family ties will show their strenght. And they will help each other in what ever issues , to cope with problems (either financially or materially).
And yes , it is true that the pension is very low.I`m not sure if 1 person , can live on that amount of money , for 1 month.
Now I was only referring to the costs of living.
But what , when your laundry machine or central heating breaks ??
Or when you need to go to the hospital or the doctor ??And have some treatments ??
When your children are sick ?
I now only have Ukraine as an example , but in almost all former CIS countries , this is the case.
I understand , that it is going to cost some money , to go over there and meet some ladies.
You can find some on this site and try to find out , if you are interested in each other. And when it is a good idea to have a meeting.
But I wish you good luck in your search
Eric
