For me, I do not use the wink. It is a very low risk way of communicating interest without risking a rejection. I see it as "hello, look at me and see if I am acceptable to engage in more communication". For me, in such matters, "Fortune goes to the brave", so I do not wink. But everyone has their own opinion about how to interpret the slight and low risk gesture.
