I guess our childhood can affect how we feel about your comment. My father was in the military. We lived abroad 4.5 of my first 12 years. We moved almost every year as a child. Rarely saw grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins. Would I have liked to have seen them more, yes.
My mother is 81 in April. My brother provides her care. Is it hard to be away from her? Yes! I see her twice a year. Am I a bad son? She doesn't think so. I guess everyone else can answer that. I will see her next month.
Family is important to me. But, now I am living in China.
