Effective ways of learning a foreign language

Since there is great interest in this topic, I'll gladly share my experience with you.
Obviously going to the country and really exposing yourself to the environment is the top choice, but who has time (and money) for this?

So here come a few workable options that have proven very useful:

1) Offer a language exchange on an equitable basis, i.e. the same amount of time in one language for the same amount of time in the other (e.g. 45 min of English for 45 min of Russian). There are plenty of websites for that. Here's just one example [http://cafetalk.com] you can easily search others. Skype in combination with powerpoint works like a charm.
2) Find someone in your area for real life lessons. Russian and English speaking people can be found in every corner of mother earth and start a 1-1 private tutorial. The advantage: you can completely adjust to the person, their wants & expectations and the learning situation.
3) Join a speaking club. In many places you will find culture clubs, language centres or rotary clubs that promote the respective language you seek. Keep an open eye on those and you will progress and often experience good food on top!
4) Check for package tours that offer INTENSIVE QUALITY courses. This is the most expensive and most time-consuming option when it comes to preparation, but it yields the greatest results within a relatively short time span.
Good luck with all your efforts!
