Traveling in Russia

Good day friends, I’m planning an extended trip to the eastern countries this summer. In looking into the visa requirements, I’ve seen that foreigners must have an invitation to the country and also that they must register with the local authorities when staying in a new city. Although this seems like a leftover procedure from the old Soviet Union days, I have to admit I wish the United States had a similar method of tracking foreigners. My question is how rigid is this system? Will l be able to freely travel to different parts of the country on short notice, checking in with authorities when I arrive or will I need to get approval first? I’m visiting with the idea of long term residency there so I want to see several parts of the country. Russia is so vast that I’m sure the regions are very different from each other.
