Thanks for the colorful photos. I visit these places every year. Crimea is really beautiful region, with its picturesque nature, local food delicacies and wonderful people. Service, however, leaves much to be desired. But seasoned travelers as tanks, not afraid of dirt!LOL I heartily encourage you to visit Kiev. This is a very beautiful, ancient and modern city. You are welcome!

all the way to the stunning "northern lights" floating the sky on dark and frosty winter nights.....

Yes, colours of nature are amazing. People will always try to depict them in their arts, crafts, poetry and songs.
The red plant which is on the picture (guelder rose, 'kalyna' in the Ukrainian language) is the symbol of woman's beauty and it is a characteristic feature of the Ukrainian decorative folk arts and folk costumes, as well. The most remarkable artistic phenomenon of the Ukrainian culture is the Petrykivka Style of Painting, so called 'magic realism'. It is a very poetic view of the world around us, or better to say, it is a world in itself, a world which is free to interpret the usual things in a very unusual manner. Tradition says that Petrykivka village was founded by a group of Ukrainian Cossacks in the 18th century and it happened that soon after its foundation, the village, for some mysterious reasons, began to attract people with artistic gifts who came to settle down there. May be it happened because Cossacks were free, independent, there was no serfdom on that territory. In Petrykivka style of painting three colours are predominant — red, yellow (or yellow-green), and dark blue. The berries of the guelder rose are usually painted with fingers and pipettes (!). Petrykivka is not far away from my place.

Many times when in Ukraine,
me and my boys drives to small villages far away from the main roads.
I have learned them how to see the difference,,
between what was built before and after the revolution.
Sometimes It's almost painful to see what your people lost in the years after.
but I see hope in some of the photo you have showed to me Inessa.
Unfortunately we might not live long enough to see it reborn as it once was.

My heart is weak for the incredible beauty you can find in some birds..
For many years,,,, before my boys were born, I loved photographing birds....

Hello, Jan. Thanks very much for the photos. I think it's difficult to take photos of a bird - it's necessary to 'catch' it. I don't know if you and your sons have been to Askania Nova, so I'd like to present one more fantastic place of Ukraine.

Askania-Nova is one of the oldest and largest biosphere reserves in Europe, located in a remote part of Kherson region in Ukraine. Nowadays, it consists of a zoological park, a botanical (dendrological garden) and an open territory of virgin steppe (110 km², or 42.5 sq mi). The total area is 825 km² (318.5 sq mi). The unique steppe reserve Askania Nova was founded in 1883 by the German, Baron Friedrich Falz-Fein who managed not only to preserve the wild feather-grass steppe and its inhabitants but also enrich it with numerous kinds of flora and fauna. In addition to local species, the zoo’s unique collection includes Indian and African antelopes, zebras, yaks, deer, bisons, llamas, Scottish ponies, wild Przewalski's horses, saigas, and many more. The variety of birds in Askania-Nova is impressive – white and black swans, cranes, ostriches, flamingos, peacocks, bustards, emus, parrots and many other rare species. More than 200 species of foliaceous and coniferous plants were brought from different parts of the world and planted in the dendrological garden during 1885 - 1902. About 600 higher plants (both perennial and annual), 16 species of which were entered to the Red Data Book of Ukraine, have been preserved in their primary natural form. Askania Nova arboretum was built on an artificially irrigated land. Water for irrigation of the park was extracted from a depth of 70 meters. The canals were laid out on the whole territory of the park so water is delivered even to its remotest parts. The entire surface of the water tower is covered with wild ivy now, so the tower has become a lively and wonderful monument of nature. In a remote part of the arboretum the artificial lake was created which is very common to see white swans.
