I don't know too many people that would find a man falling on his face funny but it depends on the context. Are you familiar with the TV show "Tosh.O"? It often shows videos from the internet of stupid people or people being hurt and makes fun of them. There are several tv shows that are similar. Some people find that type of comedy humorous and others do not, but it's not universal. Actually, I would think most Americans (except college age kids maybe) find it offensive and cruel. If a foreigner saw the show and witnessed a bunch of people laughing at people being hurt, I can see how that would give a bad impression. I'm not saying that's what happened with you, Dennis, I'm just giving an example of some of our cultural differences.

Americans DO laugh and smile in every day situations and conversations, though, even at mundane things, as you know. That is just part of our culture as I said before. If I behaved that way in Russia people might think I was stupid or belonged in a mental institution. If I did not behave that way in the USA, people would think I was cold, angry, sad, or maybe just very serious.

I'm glad you have seen various parts of the USA. I'm always saddened when visitors only come to see California or New York City. Neither represent the "real" America to me. Every country and culture has good and bad people but I hope you have met more good Americans than bad. If you are ever around Wyoming, Colorado, or North Dakota, let me know. I'd love to buy you a beer and hear about your experiences.
