Traveling in Russia

Good day friends, I’m planning an extended trip to the eastern countries this summer. In looking into the visa requirements, I’ve seen that foreigners must have an invitation to the country and also that they must register with the local authorities when staying in a new city. Although this seems like a leftover procedure from the old Soviet Union days, I have to admit I wish the United States had a similar method of tracking foreigners. My question is how rigid is this system? Will l be able to freely travel to different parts of the country on short notice, checking in with authorities when I arrive or will I need to get approval first? I’m visiting with the idea of long term residency there so I want to see several parts of the country. Russia is so vast that I’m sure the regions are very different from each other.

Hi Michael,
The process is, in fact, quite simple:
In your case, I would most STRONGLY advise you to get a tourist visa. That will permit you to stay inside Russia for a maximum of 30 days. There are several options to obtain an invitation which you need to produce when you apply for your visa (at the Embassy, a Consulate General or at an OFFICIAL visa agency, i.e. accredited partners. I most strongly advise AGAINST any other form of private arrangement or agency. The temptation to trick someone is vast for them and the chance for you to obtain compensation pitifully low.
Once you enter the country, you need to register with the official partner (agency or person, if you choose airbnb for example). Once you register, you're free to travel, but you must stay the first 72 hours in the place of registration. If you begin your tour in Moscow or St. Pete, this ought to be simple, as both places offer way more than 3 days of cultural enrichment and delightful experience.

Thanks again Ben. I guess the paperwork sounds worse that it really is.

Hi Michael,

I've posted this information before but you're new to the forum. I have used this company service for invitation letter for a Russian visa many times, and it was always easy, quick, and professional. The invitation was accepted by the Russian consulate in Houston without a single question. They sent us a scan of the invitation by email and we printed it out. That sufficed for the consulate. The price is 1,000RUB ~ $15.

Good luck.

Michael,
